Pakistan Journal of Statistics

History

Statisticians and researchers in Pakistan have long been feeling the need for a decent national journal of Statistics. With this aim in view, Dr. Munir Ahmad, paid frequent visits to the University of the Punjab and after regular meetings with Mr. Mazhar Hussain, Director, Social Sciences Research Centre, they agreed to publish the Pakistan Journal of Statistics (PJS). The first volume was published utilizing the Centre's meager facilities. For a long-term arrangement, Dr. Munir Ahmad approached his colleagues at the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. They were generous enough to become life members without any guarantee that the Journal will continue for long. After the publication of the second volume, Dr. Munir Ahmad and Mr. Mazhar Hussain, were encouraged by the response from readers both from within and outside Pakistan. The survival of the journal depends on the policy of strict refereeing, and its timely publication; and they have tried their best to follow these principles.

The Journal has entered its nineteenth year and we feel proud of making our humble contribution to the knowledge of statistics. We have tried many publisher/printers to improve the quality of the Journal and we are continuously working towards its improvement.

It is my duty to record our appreciation of the members of the International Editorial Board, referees and other who have contributed towards its publication. It will be hardly fair if I do not mention late Mr. Mazhar Hussain who, in spite of his ophtalmic disorder, worked for the Journal until his retirement. Mr. Hasnat Khatana was the first Editor who worked day and night for publishing the first issue of the Journal. He remained with us till he was transferred by his parent department. He was replaced Mr. Mahmood Khalid Qamar who worked as diligently as Mr. Hasnat Khatana till the Journal was streamlined. What you see of this Journal now is the hard work of Mr. Khatana and Mr. Qamar. We owe our gratitude to them.

We are indebted to Dr. Muhammad Hanif, Editor PJS who has taken almost single-handedly the responsibility of the Journal and to Mr. Akhlaq Ahmad, Executive Editor, PJS and Executive Director, Islamic Countries Society of Statistical Sciences (ISOSS) Headquarters Office, Lahore, Pakistan; have appreciably contributed to the success of the Journal.

The services rendered by Mr. Muhammad Iftikhar, Executive Secretary and Mr. Muhammad Imtiaz, Office Secretary are greatly appreciated.
